Social & Pragmatics

Social or pragmatic communication disorders occur when a person has trouble with the social use of verbal and/or nonverbal communication. These are common with autism, but also occur in conjunction with traumatic brain injury, intellectual disabilities, and others.

Cognitive Communication

Cognitive-communication disorders may include problems organizing thoughts, paying attention, remembering, planning, and/or problem-solving. These may occur following a traumatic brain injury or stroke, although they may be present from birth.

Language

A language disorder is present if a person has difficulty understanding language (receptive) or sharing their thoughts and ideas (expressive). A language disorder may exist with auditory/verbal language or with reading/writing.

Speech

Speech disorders occur when a person has difficulty producing certain speech sounds. A common example is a person saying “wabbit” for “rabbit”. A person with a speech disorder may also have difficulty with voice or resonance accompanying laryngeal trauma, muscular disorders, or traumatic brain injury.

Fluency

Disfluencies during speech occur naturally, but if a stutter or stammer interfere with a person’s day-to-day life, they may want to visit a speech therapist for an evaluation.

Feeding & Swallowing

People of all ages can experience difficulty feeding or swallowing. Swallowing disorders (known as dysphagia) may occur from birth, or exist following illness, stroke, surgery, or injury.
